Edge Case, a leader in safety assurance for autonomous systems, today announced the completion of the first phase of an independent safety case assessment for May Mobility, an autonomous vehicle technology company advancing driverless mobility. The assessment continues a partnership between the two companies that began in 2022.
In this phase, Edge Case independently examined the structure and completeness of May Mobility’s safety case framework, and found it demonstrated a level of rigor and thoroughness consistent with industry best practices.
“Building confidence in autonomous systems requires a structured safety case,” said Nathan Parker, CEO of Edge Case. “May Mobility takes this responsibility seriously, and our latest work together focused on strengthening the foundation of its safety case and the evidence supporting it.”
Supporting May Mobility’s Approach to Autonomous Vehicle Safety
Edge Case applied its DevSafeOps™ methodology, which integrates safety into a system’s development and operations, to independently assess May Mobility’s driverless safety case framework. The review evaluated how the safety case is organized, the completeness and clarity of its claims, and its alignment with recognized autonomous vehicle safety standards and frameworks, including UL 4600 and the Open Autonomy Safety Case (OASC).
Following the assessment, May Mobility is enacting the key recommendations, including:
- Streamlining and simplifying its safety case framework, making it easier to interpret and to manage across scaled deployments.
- Strengthening how it measures safety performance against a clear human-driving benchmark.
- Expanding how it monitors, evaluates, and acts on real-world driving data.
- Formalizing its release decisions so that independent assessment is a critical step in driverless deployment. May Mobility also continues to invest in developing its safety team and safety management practices.
“Trust in autonomous vehicles has to be earned, and independent assessment is essential to doing so,” said Matt Wood, VP of Safety and Validation at May Mobility. “Edge Case’s review affirmed our safety case and outlined a path to strengthening it as we scale autonomous operations to new communities.”
Building on this work, the partnership will continue to focus on evaluating individual safety claims and the evidence supporting them, reflecting the industry’s growing focus on showing how safety claims are supported in practice.
